Sewing by the Sea began modestly, in 1991, in an old carpenter shop in the town of Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island. In 1998, after infusing the local community with an excitement for quilting and sewing, as well as becoming an authorized Pfaff dealer, the business outgrew the store's location and moved just over the bridge to a 2100 sq. ft., two story building in the neighboring town of Trenton.
The store's goal to provide year-round service to the local sewing community continued at the new location, offering a full line of Pfaff sewing machines, premium fabrics for quilting and garment sewing and a wonderful selection of patterns, notions, books. Additionally, a full lineup of classes, in a variety of sewing styles and skill levels, are offered to meet the educational needs of local customers. With square footage to spare, the upper floor of the building was converted into a quilters haven, where seamstresses of all ages could mingle, learn and share.
